Recollections of Survival
A true story of hardship, devastation, and survival during WWII and the
Greek Civil War
Nikos A. Karavasos
Nikos takes you through a family's painstaking adventure of famine, terror, and
daily struggles for survival during the German occupation of Greece, as well as the
subsequent immoral struggle of Greeks killing each other - father against son,
husband's family against wife's family, brother against brother.
We have heard numerous times of death camps and millions of Jews killed by the
Germans. Movies were made of the Holocaust, Schindler's List, and others but that
is not the only place where the Germans committed atrocities.
In Greece more than 50,000 Jews were killed and many more Greeks lost their lives.
Even in my small village of Zoupena the Nazis gunned down twenty-one innocent
people in cold blood.
As if the WWII catastrophe was not enough, a more internal war in Greece took the
country into deeper depths of sufferings.
A young boy's candid account of the events as he experienced them provides a
remarkable trail of famine, terror, and survival for himself and his family.

A New Life in America, (from Hell to Paradise)
A new Life Begins after Having Survived
WWII and the Greek Civil War
Nikos A. Karavasos

Others may have lived similar journeys, but this remarkable journey of life in
America is mine and mine
alone. We ventured as a displaced family and we arrived in the land of
opportunity, penniless and not
speaking a word of English. We were able to not only survive but also excel in
our diverse undertakings.
Although my brothers and sister followed in the footsteps of my father engaging
in the food business as
successful entrepreneurs, I on the other hand realized that a college education
will serve me better. And it
sure did.
Six months before I
graduated I was given a position by the most admired airplane company in the
world
– Boeing.
I was successfully employed for 38 years until dynamic changes in world events
but mostly company miscues
toppled it from the pedestal.
The new make up of The
Boeing Company after buying out McDonnell-Douglas in 1997 was detrimental to
Boeing heritage people. They were pushed aside while the ‘knowledgeable
newcomers’ ran the show. That’s
when I saw my way out and left the company to pursue my travels, enjoy my
hobbies, and do consulting for the
government.
For the most part my years with Boeing were happy years allowing me to provide
for my family as the sole
provider, something almost unthinkable today as two worker families being the
norm.
A good portion of the book
describes my travels throughout Europe but mainly my travels to over 30 Greek
Isles as well as the entire mainland including my paradise on earth – Tsintzina.
